Latest reviews of Portuguese <-> German Dictionary Standard app for iPhone and iPad
Very good indeed
Complete and fast, as one would expect from Langensheidt !
Extremely limited functionality, extremely overpriced
I just bought this app and Im deeply disappointed. After only a few minutes of use I sent feedback to cancel the buy but having bought it in the US app store I have little hope for a refund. It is not what I expected or what I was lead to believe. I buy a lot of apps and am willing to spend money if I get back in value what I pay. I spent probably close to $1000 in apps so far, at times spending over $100 per app. This $41.38 app in its current form is not worth more than $4.99 - and thats with a lot of goodwill.
I looked at this app because Im equally comfortable in English and German and was looking for a good Portuguese dictionary for offline use. I already have the Ultralingua PT-Eng which is a great app with great functionality but a quite limited vocabulary and sometimes even wrong or at least not common translations. Ultralingua improved on the content by partnering with Ultralingua but they refuse to apply the same dictionary to prior buyers and even keep the same dictionary in the app store at the same price!!! So, not wanting to buy the same app twice I was looking for alternatives and found the Langenscheidt dictionary. What a huge buying mistake!!!
It claims to contain detailed grammar and many more details but it just has a very simple translation of words. After reviewing various Langenscheidt apps in the app store I was expecting to at least have verbs fully conjugated in all tenses and forms but not even the present tense is conjugated. Not in Portuguese nor in German. Its extremely rudimentary. Having grown up using Langenscheidt paper dictionaries this is an extreme disappointment.
The software itself is also not well thought through. Its difficult to navigate and the audio module that is supposed to pronounce at least the German words doesnt function ( or if it does for a few words I have not come across those having tried key words such as "kommen". The flash card functionality is another disappointment. Its empty and you have to add every single entry in order to build a deck. I was expecting a more guided approach to that.
Navigating back and forth in the search entry page is cumbersome. Instead of showing a big Langenscheidt logo on the top left a back button will greatly improve experience.
There are other cheaper dictionaries out there with much better functionality both from a content and from a usability perspective. As an example for about half the price, check out the Ultralingua Collins dictionary for Portuguese-English ( there is another one with the same functionality but inferior dictionary also from Ultralingua)
It is for apps like this where vendors charge a lot of money without a default trial options that countries have forced Apple to always provide the trial option. I hope that they honor my request.
Unless you look for a simple dictionary and you are willing to spend a lot of money for basics, I would strongly advise against a buy.
Unbelievable!!!!!
It is an absurd that the earlier edition had Audio pronunciation. All of a sudden, after the update, the audio pronunciation of the german words disappeared!!! It is such a disappointment from an editor which I admired. I am still waiting for a formal contact from Langenscheidt!
I would like my money back and a reasonable explanation from Langescheidt!!!!
